Day 16: Townsville Museum

 Today began with a nice long walk. Dean dropped me on the strand (the paved walkway that goes along the ocean) and I wandered along the shore for a few kilometers, people watching and just enjoying the scenery. It was such a good walk on a really beautiful breezy day. 


I made my way to the Queensland Museum where there were exhibits on the coral reefs and wildlife of the region. It was definitely a museum aimed for kids, lots of interactive stuff, but I’m basically a large child so I had a lot of fun playing around. 


I walked back towards the house wandering in and out of little shops of the way.

Hobart, Hartz NP, and Southern NP

  After 19 nights of sleeping in a tent (it went really fast, I didn’t really realize it until Quentin and I started adding up how long we’d been traveling together) I decided I wanted a hotel room. So as we passed through Hobart I got for myself a nice room in a comfy hotel where I luxuriated in the evening after we got dinner. He didn’t want to go in on a hotel to get one with a second bed and chose instead to sleep in his home/car.   The next day we did as two botanists do best, and went to the botanical garden. We wandered around admiring the cool floras. They had a room dedicated to Antarctic plants which was really neat. Then we got some lunch and headed out of town. It’s funny, idk if it’s just him or cultural, but he does not feel the need to park close to places and is happy to plan to walk for a while, which is totally fine, and I don’t mind but occasionally find myself surprised by it. Saigon final day

I think I’ve come to the realization that big cities are just a bit too much for me, at least the main parts of them. I found the markets and the tourist attracts extremely overwhelming and realized that wandering around in big cities, especially in places where people are trying to call you in and get you to buy all their stuff is just too much for me. I find it extremely stressful. So after a few hours of wandering I went back to my hotel room to rest for a while and skip out on the heat of the day it’s 97 degrees here and just so hot during the day, but it cools off a lot in the evening.   As the sun started to get low in the sky I began wandering around the area my hotel is located in. There is a big mall, lots of tall skyscrapers for wealthy people to presumably live, and a big beautiful park. The park was full of locals who come from all over to enjoy the area. Day 13: pool and planning fay

  Apparently my ear plugs and eye mask are working well, cause Dean and Jenny were shocked this morning that I slept through 2 hours of the fencing company putting up poles and cutting trees with my windows open. I’m not surprised though, hostel sleeping is far from quiet or dark so I’ve been working on my skills of sleeping through noise and light.   I got up and they dropped me at the pool on their way to the gym. It was nice to get some laps in and stretch out a bit. Afterwords I wandered down the strand a bit before heading back home to get some work done.  I spent a few hours working and in the evening I wandered around the garden looking at all their cool flowers. Then I did a bit of planning for the next few weeks, coming up with some ideas to check out the surrounding area!
