Day 20: Travel day and Osaka

 


I woke up late and took my time getting out the the hotel. I enjoyed a lovely coffee as I waited for my bullet train to Osaka. In the afternoon I arrived at Osaka and got a snack of Takiyaki. Which are batter balls that melt in your mouth filled with octopus. To me honestly the octopus didnt do much for me, it’s a bit chewy, but the batter part is delicious. It’s really creamy and covers in a sweet but savory sauce. 






While waiting for my hotel shuttle, who did I run into? My aunt and uncle Jenny and Dean! (We are staying at the same hotel, but we didn’t plan on meeting up til later). We checked in and went for a wander through the street food district of Osaka. It was busy and we got a big meal of tempura! It was so yummy. I also get a delicious plum wine with my dinner which was lovely. 





We also picked up some cute cream puffs. 




We slowly made our way back to the hotel and went for some free drinks in the hotel lounge and hung and chatted for a while. 


Finally we called it and early evening and I went for a soak and relaxed for a while. It was a good and restful day, and then got to relax in a very nice hotel

Suncheon

  The next stop along my route was Suncheon. I mostly picked this spot out of convenience, but it was a nice city to stop in for a couple days.   The first day I just kinda wandered around the area, I wasn’t quite sure where I was going and was a bit indecisive so I ended up just wandering the town with no real plan, which truthfully is a great way to explore. I ended up seeing some really beautiful parks, as well as a bit of a tourist quarter, and an area around a middle school which had lots of small kids a few of whom hid behind their moms nervous to say hello to me, but clearly wanting to. Of course, they all got a piece of chocolate for their bravery in saying hello in English.  In the evening I returned to my room where I chatted with my two roommates, a French and a German girl. Leaving Aus

  It’s hard to believe that 358 days ago I landed in Australia. It’s been an incredible journey. I’ve met and re-acquainted with so many incredible people, seen outstanding natural wonders, and had the opportunity to focus on my personal growth and joy. A week short of my visa expiring I’m continuing onto the next journey. There is a lot unknown ahead of me, but there always is in life.   I would be hard pressed to condense this last year into a short essay. This blog is a testament to that for sure. I’ve driven nearly 40,000km around this beautiful continent, as well as taken many ferries, a long train journey, buses, flights, and walked many kms. I’ve walked holes into the bottom of my shoes but my feet have happily journeyed on.  Since last October I’ve rarely stayed in one place more than 3 nights, and I’ve likely slept more nights in a tent than a bed.  It’s been an incredible journey. Gyeongju

 My next stop is Gyeongju. It once was the 4th biggest city in the world and was the capital of the Silla empire, but you wouldn’t really know that from it today. It is called the museum without walls, and is a UNESCO world heritage site. It’s a really beautiful city to walk around in. So much of the historic architecture is preserved in the city, traditional ‘Hanook’ houses stand still, many have been turned into inns, restaurants, and cafes.  There are large grassy hills, maybe 20 meter in height, all around the city. These are old burial mounds of royal/important people. The city is designed around them with green spaces, palaces, pagodas, temples, and museums scattered throughout the area free to wander. It’s a great place to experience history and look into culture.
