Day 9: Townsville
Today was more about getting my bearing and set up. I slept in a bit and went and got my cellphone plan sorted. Then we drove around Townsville a bit and checked out the city and spent some time just chatting and relaxing with Jenny and Dean. It was nice to hang with them a bit and rest and relax and get everything all sorted.
Their house is a beautiful 100 year old ‘Queenslander.’ It’s a wooden house on stilts. The master bedroom living/diving room, and kitchen are enclosed, with doors with beautiful glass windows. The veranda wraps around half the house and contains the guest bedroom and the rest of the house. It’s enclosed, but the windows are slatted or just open and close. So far it’s been quite nice with the breeze, even without ac in the outer portions of the house it hasn’t been bad at all. It’s really pleasant since the wind goes through the house.
Watching the bird life here is great too. I saw tons of birds at their feeders and of course there are the magpies which they feed. There is a mom and dad and 3 fledglings. When they see us they call around, and if the door is open the mom will just come inside and wander about. The only way to get her out is to give her a snack outside.
I also saw lorikeets, a Tores Straight pigeon, blue faced honey suckers, and lots of small brown birds I didn’t recognize. Overall it was a really great day
