Wilson’s Prom
The next morning I hit the road to go to Wilson’s Promenade National Park. It’s a large peninsula that is entirely national park and mostly inaccessible by car.
On the drive over I had a minor catastrophe being unable to find fuel, with a low tank because all the servos (gas stations) were out of power and couldn’t pump gas. I pulled into one though and the worker told me that there was one with power 30 minutes up the road, and I was able to get there no problem.
I made my way to the park and it was a beautiful drive. I saw a few emus grazing in a field, and the stunning mountains overlooking the pristine white beaches were beautiful. The area was forested with short statured Eucalyptus trees and every corner of the turn was incredible.
I set up my tent and went for an overlook hike. I saw views of the mountains and beaches and it was really lovely. On my walk I saw an echidna as well! It was a big one, snuffling in the dirt looking for ants. It would stick its long nose straight into the dirt and huff and a small puff of dirt would go up. Then it would continue on doing the same thing. It was cool to watch.
Following my hike I went to squeaky beach. Voted the best beach in Australia I guess. It was beautiful. It’s named for the sand, which makes a squeaky noise when you walk. It’s very similar to the sound when you walk in wet flip flops. There were a number of people there enjoying the crystal clear water and light waves and it was lovely.
Following my swim, i went to take a shower, on the way I found a little wombat having its dinner along the path. After, I decided to go make dinner and get some work done on an outlook where the cell service was good. I made a really great dinner of Korean rice cakes with fried tofu, mushrooms, and zucchini with a garlic soy sauce. I then set my laptop up on the ledge and got a bunch of work done at my makeshift standing desk. You can’t beat those views and it was the best service in the area. Eventually I got too cold and had to go sit in the car to finish my work up in the car. I was not prepared for the summer here to be in the low 50s at night. That’s far colder than I had hoped.
Overall, it was a really great day.
