Bay of Fires

The next stop on our journey was Bay of Fires on the north east coast. It’s named for the reddish orange lichens that grow on the rocks along the edge of the water. They are stunning in contrast to the aqua blue water. The water here is unbelievably clear. Neck deep you can look down and see your feet like there is nothing but air between you and them. The white sands give it this incredible blue color and when the sun begins to set the entire world appears to be painted in bright unusual colors. I’ve seen a lot of incredible sunsets and oceans, but this has to be among the top, if not the top. I don’t think a color in existence wasn’t on display during the sunset.

We spent one day exploring the area, unfortunately, we ended up spending most of our time though going very slowly down the road. I wanted to see this lighthouse (had I known the journey I probably wouldn’t have gone) but it was only 40 km away, down a dirt highway. We figured it was maybe an hour and a bit drive there, the phone said 40 minutes, so we were optimistic. I rarely drive more than 20kph, and often less, the road was washboarded the whole way, and we kept having stops we wanted to see along the way (all of which were a bit disappointing). We still saw some beautiful views and swam in the frigid ocean, but we probably would have had a better time sticking by our campsite. Alas, you don’t know what you don’t know and it was a long day in the car but music  and saying hello to cows and sheep got us through lol.

When we made dinner in the evening at our campsite, we had some really bold possums come try to steal our food. They were not afraid and would sidle right up to our stove and try to have a look and a steal. They are cheeky critters. Unfortunately, the east coast has a fire ban so we weren’t able to have a fire in the evening, which with the recent daylight savings means an early night. Even with an hour or two of star gazing we have gone our separate ways by 8 to warm up in our beds.
