Flat Tire Day

The next day we headed back towards Perth with the intention of kayaking on the Murray River. This was the day where everything really went wrong. Firstly, I had looked up kayaking, but didn’t check the day of the week and we were told there wasn’t any kayaks for rent that day. Later we would find out there were and the person who told us that just didn’t know and told us the wrong info, but at the time I just thought I messed up. We parked trying to decide what to do next when suddenly I had a flat tire. Luckily, we were already parked and along the water in a pretty park so it wasn’t the end of the world. I called roadside assist to come change my tire for me. Yes, I can change a tire. I’ve done it many times, but its annoying and it sucks and that what I paid extra for roadside assist for anyway. So that I could not change the tire if I don’t have to. We sat in the car and read in the sun while we waited for roadside assist. He was… not my favorite. He was quite incredulous ...

Monkey Mia

Next we made the long drive to Monkey Mia. Arriving at the Shark Bay peninsula we stopped to see the magnificent shell beach and admire some beautiful look outs before continuing on to Monkey. We had finally evaded the cold, the rain, and the flies, but we now were contending with strong winds of 60km/hour. The campground was completely unobstructed for the wind so we decided to get a room for the night. Our room was somehow in the middle of a bunch of rooms of young middle-schoolers on a school trip. They were funny and friendly, and not a problem at all, but definitely not quite nor expected. There was a lot of chaos going on around us. Luckily we escaped to the beach where we were lucky to see some dolphins coasting along the shore just a few feet away from us. We walked with the dolphins and enjoyed a few drinks and snacks before an early night to bed. The next morning we got up early to go to the dolphin encounter. A few dolphins showed up and we watched them feed and pl...

Kalbarri

Next we drove northward toward Kalbarri. Kalbarri is another town that I had visited before, but I knew of some great hikes in the area, and the weather looked promising for the next few days. We books a couple nights at a caravan park. What I didn’t expect, and was not an issue a month prior when I visited, were the hordes of flies. I have a high tolerance for the flies, they don’t bite, but they do trying to crawl into your eyeballs. It’s not pleasant, but as I had already experienced much worse in the outback parts I wasn’t really phased. Emma, however, was exceeding unhappy about this new installment. The poor girl screamed in frustration at them so many times and began spending all her time sprinting between screened areas. We opted for the pool eventually where the flies weren’t so bad before the sunset and we were finally free of the incessant crawling of critters. The next day I took Emma to the store first thing and she got a face net. A necessary purchase. I however, ...
